| What is Networking ?

A computer network, or data network, is a digital telecommunications network which allows nodes to share resources. In computer networks, computing devices exchange data with each other using connections (data links) between nodes. These data links are established over cable media such as wires or optic cables, or wireless media such as WiFi. Network computer devices that originate, route and terminate the data are called network nodes.Nodes are identified by network addresses, and can include hosts such as personal computers, phones, and servers, as well as networking hardware such as routers and switches. Two such devices can be said to be networked together when one device is able to exchange information with the other device, whether or not they have a direct connection to each other. In most cases, application-specific communications protocols are layered (i.e. carried as payload) over other more general communications protocols. This formidable collection of information technology requires skilled network management to keep it all running reliably.

Why we need computer networks?

Computer networks help users on the network to share the resources and in communication. Can you imagine a world now without emails, online newspapers, blogs, chat and the other services offered by the internet?

The following are the important uses and benefits of a computer network.

  • File sharing: Networking of computers helps the network users to share data files.
  • Hardware sharing: Users can share devices such as printers, scanners, CD-ROM drives, hard drives etc. Without computer networks, device sharing is not possible.

  • Application sharing: Applications can be shared over the network, and this allows to implement client/server applications

  • User communication: Networks allow users to communicate using e-mail, newsgroups, and video conferencing etc.

  • Network gaming: A lot of network games are available, which allow multi-users to play from different locations.

  • Voice over IP (VoIP): Voice over Internet Protocol (IP) is a revolutionary change in telecommunication which allows to send telephone calls (voice data) using standard Internet Protocol (IP) rather than by traditional PSTN.

Career & Scope of Networking

Computer networking and telecommunications is a career that consists of data telecommunications, Internet routing, and desktop operating systems. In Early 2000’s, networking was considered to be one of the best jobs, and it is equally popular today. Some of the reasons for this high demand in networking are as follows:

  • Firstly State Wide Area Networks being implemented in each state along with Data Centers.
  • Secondly, with the proliferation of Wi Fi, every office was going ahead with installing a LAN.
  • Thirdly with the increase in application of internet of things there is huge amount of data being added to networks which requires increased capacity intelligence within networks. This in turn requires shift in networking infrastructure which includes improved network capacity, connectivity and cloud technologies.
  • Job outlook of Computer Networking:

According to US Bureau of Labor Statistics, 8% growth is seen in employment of network and computer systems administrators from 2014 to 2024. It is about as fast as the average for all occupations. There is a huge demand for well qualified people in this field and will continue as companies are investing in newer, faster technology and mobile networks. There were 382,600 computer networking jobs recorded in 2014.
