| What is CHILL?
In computing, CHILL (an acronym for CCITT High Level Language) is a procedural programming language designed for use in telecommunication switches (the hardware used inside telephone exchanges). The language is still used for legacy systems in some telecommunication companies and for signal box programming. The CHILL language is similar in size and complexity to the original Ada language. The first specification of the CHILL language was published in 1980, a few years before Ada. ITU provides a standard CHILL compiler. A free CHILL compiler was bundled with GCC up to version 2.95, however, was removed from later versions. An object-oriented version, called Object CHILL, was developed also.
Programs used in a telephone exchange (in the early 1970s) covered a wide range of computer programming, from real time call handling to data base management and supervising. Thus, the language was a fairly general, strongly typed, block structured language. However, its main goal was to provide constructs and tools that offered concurrent execution and coordination between parallel processes. A telephone exchange is a very typical system with concurrently executing parts, since many calls are in various stages of progress at the same time. That made the language designers stressing units and constructs that would ease the programming of such systems, mainly by adding a process concept, which was a dynamic program part which may be executed concurrently with other processes of the program.
CHILL was a very special purpose language, designed as a pretty general purpose language. Partly, the reason for that was the wide range of applications it should support: billing administration, traffic statistics and real time call handling and control. The Chill-designers thought CHILL should be able to do it all. It had to be fairly machine-oriented, or system-oriented, that is fairly low level. (Why?) Furthermore, the designers were very aware of the amount of modular programming that would go into a typical switch, and made a lot of efforts towards modular concepts, as well as modular (or in their terminology, piecewise) compilation.
For what platforms was it intended? And What language was it implemented in?
The construction of various CHILL compilers was started fairly early in the design process, around 1977. I guess various assembler languages was used to implement it. However, since it was considered fairly machine independent, some sort of implementation language might have been constructed. About the different hardware platforms: As of early 1981 (one year after the finalization of the z-200 standard), the CCITT-group on CHILL listed the following computer architectures as either planned, implemented or under development at that point in time: PDP-11, Intel 8086, Motorola 68000, S7000 (Siemens), IBM 370, DEC-20, GEC Mark II BL.
